CB&Q Class HC-1D 182726
Title:  CB&Q Class HC-1D 182726
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1D 182726 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 250 cars built between 1940 and 1961 by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops, rebuilt in 1969, reclassed as HC-1D, and renumbered into the number series 182500 - 182749. The first 200 Class HC-1D cars were painted in light gray ( body ) with black roller bearing trucks, Chinese red lettering, and full-color Scothlite heralds painted on the car sides between posts rather than a larger Scotchlite decal on a metal plate. The second 250 Class HC-1D cars featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted an all-caps "BURLINGTON" for the previous upper and lower case "Burlington" at the upper left car side. All lettering was red, and a space was left for the word "NORTHERN" to be added once the merger was consummated, but this was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering style employed by the Q on all its pre-merger painted cars did not match the Helvetica style ultimately used by the BN. No other Class HC-1's - CB&Q, C&S, or FW&D - ever received this paint scheme.

CB&Q 189797
Title:  CB&Q 189797
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 189797 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I don't have information on this car per se, however, in the book, CB&Q Color Guide To Freight And Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor, is this description of the earlier class of cars: QUOTE - During 1945, Havelock (CB&Q's shops in Nebraska) built its first all steel hoppers, outshopping 650, 34 foot 3 inch, 55 ton twin hoppers that year. These cars were designated HT-5B and numbered 189000-189649. - Another 1,000 55 ton hoppers were built at Havelock in 1948, classified as HT-5C and assigned the number series 188000-188999. - END QUOTE The Official Railway Equipment Register dated January 1953 lists 1988 CB&Q 110000 pound capacity hoppers in the number range 188000-189999. That would suggest that the CB&Q built more of these hoppers and generally the next batch would have been classed as HT-5C. So possibly this car was a continuation of HT-5B series. I tried reading the BLT date but it was corroded. It looked like BLT 5.46, located under the ACI label.

Description:  CB&Q class XM-32D 60000 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November, 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q had 2,500 class XM-32D's built at the Havelock, Nebraska shops during 1953. Previous 40 foot boxcars were in the 17000 and 30000 number series, and the railroad was forced to go either below the already occupied 17000 number series or above the 50000 stockcar number series. The 60000 number series was chosen, and 2,250 40 foot boxcars were assigned CB&Q 60000-62249 series, and 250 cars were assigned to the FW&D 9001-9250 number series. The first 1,500 CB&Q cars were equipped with the No. 79 truck, the remainder of the production run was equipped with the No. 81 truck. All except the FW&D cars were fitted with the Youngstown corrugated door; the FW&D cars received Superior five-panel doors. When built, all were painted mineral red and received the Way of the Zephyrs and Everywhere West slogan paint scheme. Cars repaired after 1958 received the Chinese Red paint with Way of the Zephyrs and Everywhere West slogans in block lettering below the herald, and white stripes above and below the reporting marks. Those details were eliminated during the 1960's. Also during the 1960's the Scotchlite herald decal was replaced with a stencil, still in full red/black/white. By 1968, the BN merger was all but assured, and cars repaired after 1968 received the BN Cascade Green pre-merger paint scheme and assigned the BN 161000-161899 number series.

CB&Q Class LO-4 85540
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-4 85540
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-4 85540 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner:

In the early 1960's, Pullman-Standard developed the PS-2CD design, which eliminated the split discharge gates by running the center sill through the inside of the hoppers, thus allowing a single, center-discharge outlet for each hopper, for a total of three outlets per car instead of the previously standard six. Cubic capacity was increased to 4,000 cubic feet by raising the sides another 18 inches and extending the slope sheets all the way to the end of the car frame. Roller bearing trucks of 100-ton capacity were also employed. The Q bought 190 PS-2CD's in 1963, numbering them 85500 - 85689. The first 140 were class LO-4 ( the HC class designation having been abandoned after 1961 ) and featured the traditional 10 circular loading hatches. The last 50 cars were the first Burlington covered hoppers with trough loading hatches and thus were classed LO-4A. All 190 cars still employed the 4/3/4 outside post pattern and had Enterprise gravity outlets.
