Horseshoe Curve-1961. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 August 1961. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7128, #7170, and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All five are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7128 was constructed in June of 1957, while #7170 was built in October of the same year. In this context, they're pulling a 50-car TrucTrain around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the head-end brakeman in the second unit! As of 04 July 2016, or 55 years later, #7128 ~ now numbered "7580" ~ is in active excursion service with Steam Into History at New Freedom, Pennsylvania. |
