| Description: |
AMTK GP40 661 was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on train No. 58 – the northbound CITY OF NEW ORLEANS – near the end of its brief career with Amtrak. The locomotive entered revenue service on No. 58 in September 1991 and was now leaving on one of its last trips. It was one of 15 GP40’s (AMTK 650-664) leased from Helm Financial Services in 1991-93 and based out of the diesel shop at NOUPT. Amtrak decided not to exercise its purchase option on these locos, so most of them were returned to Helm via the Illinois Central at New Orleans and sent to the VMV Shops at Paducah, Kentucky. The 661 was delivered to the IC on 27 May 1993. It had been built in December 1968 as Penn Central 3246 and was subsequently CR 3246, B&M 341, AMTK 661, HLCX 661, HLCX 4404 and HCRY (Huron Central) 3802. |

Former Amtrak GP40 661 was at the Illinois Central’s MAYS YARD on the west side of New Orleans. The locomotive was on its way from Amtrak back to its owner Helm Financial via the VMV shop at Paducah, Kentucky. It had been built in December 1968 as Penn Central 3246 and was subsequently CR 3246, B&M 341, AMTK 661, HLCX 661, HLCX 4404 and HCRY (Huron Central) 3802. |
