PRR 2242, EF-22, 1963
Title:  PRR 2242, EF-22, 1963
Description:  Altoona. Here is a photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken from the 7th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1963. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2242, #2239, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All are EF-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #2242 and #2239 were built in May of 1963. In this context, they're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Forwarding Yard and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. In the background is the wrought-iron 4th Street Footbridge. Next over, the steam-era water tower awaits demolition. At the far left are some of the PRR's soon-to-be-abandoned Passenger Car Shops. Title:  PRR 2245, EF-22, 1966
Description:  Birmingham. Here is an original photo that I took near Birmingham, Pennsylvania, on 16 April 1966. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2245, #2242, and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. #2245 and #2242 are EF-22's built by GM-EMD in May of 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. They're pulling an eastbound mixed-cargo freight train through what was once the whistlestop at Birmingham ~ site of the Grier School for Girls, the Birmingham School for Girls before that, and the Mountain Female Seminary before that!
