Here is an original 35mm color slide by Paul Carpentino that was taken while riding in an excursion train at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 November 1987. Prominent here is former Pennsylvania Railroad engine #7048, an EFS-17M road switcher built by GM-EMD in December of 1955, rated a 1,750 horsepower, later owned by the Penn Central Railroad and Conrail, and finally enshrined at the Curve on 5 September 1985. Wave to the Railfans! |

Partial Caption: "Conrail SD40 helpers 6296-6290 assist restored PRR E8's 5898-5706 on a seventeen-car consist around Horseshoe Curve on November 1, 1987." From here, it's up to Gallitzin, through one tunnel, around the wye, through the New Portage Tunnel, down "The Mountain" and around the Curve to Altoona. |
