Album Info:Here are ten original photos of Pennsylvania Railroad trains that I took in or near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, during 1960 and 1964. Also included is a related image by another photographer from the Penn Central Railroad era.

Description:  Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in November of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9542, #9550-B, and #9654. All are EF-15A's built by GM-EMD as EH-15's for helper service, rated at 1,500 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as EF-15A's. #9542 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1965. #9550-B was built in December of 1948 and retired in September of 1965. #9654 was built in February of 1950. They're parked (with engines off) at the locomotive servicing facility located on the wye connecting the east- and westbound legs of the mainline in Gallitzin.

Description:  Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the State Route 53 Bridge near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in November of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8704, #8706, and #8825. #8704 and #8706 are FS-24M "Train Masters" built by Fairbanks-Morse in September of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8825 is an AS-16M road switcher built by the American Locomotive Company in November of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. They're pulling an eastbound coal train toward Gallitzin and the New Portage Tunnel on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.)

Description:  Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the State Route 53 Bridge near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in November of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8703 and #8705. Both are FS-24M "Train Masters" built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8703 was constructed in August of 1956, while #8705 was built in September of the same year. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers for an eastbound coal train that's heading toward Gallitzin and the New Portage Tunnel. ("Red Shift" slide converted to Black & White.)

Description:  Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the tunnels under Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9785, #9788, #7069, and #8843. #9785 and #9788 are EF-15A's built by EMD in February of 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #7069 is an EFS-17M built by GM-EMD in October of 1956 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #8843 is an AS-16MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. In this context, they're emerging from the eastern portal of the New Portage Tunnel with a 108-car coal train on their way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. The N-8 cabin car is #478171.

Description:  Gallitzin. Here is an original photo that I took at the tunnels under Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 13 September 1964. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2200, #2201, #2207, #7187, #7004, #2514, and #2248. #2200 is an EF-22 built by GM-EMD in February of 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. In this context, they've surmounted the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains and are about to enter one of the westbound tunnels with a 125-car merchandise freight train. Visible in the foreground is the New Portage Secondary Track leading to Hollidaysburg, just before it merges into the mainline.

They're about to pass under the Bridge with a 97-car coal train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Eastbound Receiving Yard in Altoona. The cabin car is #477746. There're also three GM-EMD "pushers" coupled to the end of this train.

There are also three GM-EMD "pushers" coupled to the end of this train. Prominent at the right is the abutment for the original highway bridge.

All are AS-16M road switchers built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,600 horsepower each. #8591 was built in October of 1955, but #8823 was built in November of 1951. They're pulling a 100-car eastbound coal train and are about to pass under the Bridge. The N-8 cabin car is #478034. Bringing-up the rear are three GM-EMD "pushers," headed by #9676.

In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on the end of a 100-car eastbound coal train that's passing under the Bridge. Also visible is PRR N-8 cabin car #478034.
